Red Bull team boss Christian Horner has revealed that Sergio Pérez needs to perform better to keep Red Bull in the race for the constructors' title.
For Pérez, the season started off quite well. the Mexican was able to keep up with Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen and was often on the podium together with the Dutchman.
However, since the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, things have gone downhill for the Mexican and he has scored only a fraction of Verstappen's number of points. For imaging purposes, Verstappen scored 61 points in the past three races, while Pérez stuck to just 11.
Things must therefore be better for Pérez, much better. Horner too recognises this. In the paddock of the Silverstone Circuit, the British team boss spoke about his Mexican employee's race weekend. Perez flew out in Q1 and during the race a day later he managed to get no further than seventeenth place.
"Of course it is very frustrating to see that not both your cars perform well. It is frustrating to lose Checo in Q1. He did not feature during the first free practice because Isack Hadjar was driving. Then he (Perez) drove a neat second free practice. He should be around the top six from us and then to lose him in Q1 is very frustrating, but that is where we are at the moment," Horner began.
Perez's poor weekend at Silverstone has allowed McLaren to catch up with Red Bull in the constructors' championship. Currently, Red Bull's lead still stands at 71 points, but with only one car capable of scoring points, that lead could disappear in no time, especially in this season where four teams can fight for the race win every weekend.
"They (McLaren) took seven points away from us. To win the constructors' championship, both our cars have to score points, we are aware of it," said Red Bull's British team boss.
