For Max Verstappen, the race weekend in northern Italy was not one to write home about. His RB20 lacked speed in Q3 and during the race he could not do much against the drivers in front of him from seventh place. The Dutchman crossed the line in sixth place after 53 laps, almost 38 seconds behind race winner Charles Leclerc.
Due to his poorer race and third-place finish for McLaren driver Lando Norris, Verstappen has lost quite a few points against his British championship rival for the second race weekend in a row. With eight races and three Sprints to go, the gap between them still stands at 62 points.
Therefore, to win both championships, Red Bull needs new, faster parts soon. Indeed, the competition has leapfrogged the once-dominant Milton Keynes team and (at least in the case of McLaren) this does not seem to be changing.
However, there seems to be a bright spot for Verstappen and Red Bull. Speaking to Dutch news paper De Telegraaf, the Dutchman revealed that he, along with his engineers, has discovered where Red Bull's problems with the RB20 come from during a late Saturday evening meeting.
"Unfortunately I don't have a degree in engineering or aerodynamics, but I think in terms of feedback I have said all I can do. For everyone it is now clear what we have to do. We have to turn the car upside down. Last year we had the most dominant car ever and now it seems to have turned into a monster. Just uncontrollable, we have a huge balance problem. It is true that I have said a lot and it is now up to the team to come up with a lot of changes," Verstappen said.
Marko acknowledges that Verstappen has found where the problems with his RB20 are coming from. "Max recognised on Saturday where the weakness of the car is. Together with the engineers a decision has been made, how we can improve the car and make it competitive again. We just need to find out which part has made the car worse. If we knew that, we wouldn't be in this situation," the Austrian concluded.
