Stake F1 driver Valtteri Bottas has revealed to Mirror Sport that he is not in favour of returning to Mercedes' F1 team next season. According to the Finn, he wants more security for his future in Formula 1 and he cannot get that at Mercedes, as the team most likely wants a driver who will settle for a so-called '1+1 deal'.
Bottas was brought to Mercedes as Nico Rosberg's replacement and drove a total of five seasons for the German outfit: 2017 to 2021. During that time, Bottas managed to win a total of 10 races and stood on the podium a total of 58 times. Despite those achievements, it never came to a title fight with Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton. That was because there was a clear team division within the Brackley squad. Just think back to the infamous words "Valtteri, it's James" during the closing stages of the 2018 Russian Grand Prix. However, Hamilton was also simply the faster of the two Silver Arrows.
With his former teammate Hamilton set to leave the Mercedes team next year to join Ferrari, a spot has suddenly opened up at Bottas' old employer Mercedes. Asked if he is thinking of a switch to Mercedes, Bottas revealed that he would prefer to have more certainty about his Formula 1 future and thus would rather not sign a one-year deal with a team like Mercedes
"Filling a spot for one year, I don't think that's what I want or need at the moment. For next year, I want something for several years with a clear plan for the coming years and working together for that time. I think that's what I need, a good challenge and a clear plan. If I only do one year, then you are back to square one and you have to see what comes next. I'm good friends with Toto, so of course we talked about everything," Bottas said during the interview with Mirror Sport.
