Haas driver Kevin Magnussen will be able to watch the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix simply from home. This is because the Danish driver received a hefty penalty from the FIA after a collision with Alpine driver Pierre Gasly.
Magnussen is known in the paddock as a driver who would rather make contact than let another driver pass him with ease. Perhaps that is a little too short of the mark, but Magnussen's total number of penalties tells a different story.
Indeed, due to a number of previous incidents, Magnussen stood at a total of 10 penalty points on his super licence prior to the Italian Grand Prix. Should two points be added to that after the race weekend in northern Italy, Magnussen would have to sit out one Formula 1 race from the sidelines.
This is because FIA regulations state that a driver who has 12 penalty points or more on his super licence will be banned for one Formula 1 race weekend.
Besides a 10-second time penalty for his altercation with Gasly in turn four, Magnussen also ended up having two penalty points credited to his FIA super licence. As a result, he will have to sit out the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix, something the Dane himself does not understand at all.
"I am frustrated. I don't understand anything at all. I'm completely confused. Gasly and I hit each other in Turn 4, we had slight contact and both missed the corner. We came back on track and had no damage to the car. It did not affect our race and yet I get a 10-second penalty," Magnussen began speaking to international media after the race.
Magnussen feels it is especially unfair that he got a 10-second time penalty for a relatively minor offence, while VCARB driver Daniel Ricciardo ‘only’ got a five-second time penalty after pushing Magnussen's teammate Nico Hülkenberg into the gravel on the opening lap of the race, more or less ruining his race. "What's logical about that? I just don't understand it," Magnussen added.
